JNL6032   Censorship and the Media   (15 credits)

Year Running: 2016/2017
Credit level: F7

Description

The cornerstones of any democratic society are the fundamental rights to free speech, expression and freedom of the press. These rights have a range of theoretical and historical bases, yet are seen as essential to a healthy and vigorous democracy. The media is seen as having an integral role in holding those in power to account and in allowing for a diversity of opinion and expression within the public sphere. The notion of formal censorship is largely regarded to be inimical to a healthy democratic society. This module explores both the history and theory of censorship within western media systems.
